COMPUTING AND COMPUTERS

I first learnt to programme computers in 1968 using punched cards with FORTRAN 2 as the programming language. I have been interested ever since.

In the early 1980's I got my first personal computer, which was a BBC computer manufactured by ACORN with 16k of RAM.

I have upgraded steadily over the years, and now run an ACORN StrongArm RiscPC with 128M of RAM, 2M of VRAM, running RISC OS Select 6 as an operating system.

Recently the Raspberry Pi has become available. This has been designed for use in schools, but it can operate using a number of different operating systems. I am using one which gives me the choice of using either Risc OS, or Raspbian Linux.

The Raspbery Pi organisation has a web site.

I also use two computers, a desktop running Windows XP, and a laptop running Windows Vista.

The lap top as an emulator called Virtual Risc PC loaded, and the emulator runs RISC OS Select 6 as an emulated operating system.

I have stayed with RISC OS operating system because of the Friendliness of the GUI ,the ease of understanding what the computer is doing, and the availability of software which ably covers most of my everyday requirements.

Acorn have long since vanished as a computer manufacturer, but RISCOS Ltd have taken over the operating system.

I am a member of the Iceni Computer Club, which provides a local forum for computer enthusiasts in Ipswich including those using these excellent machines.

The club has a web site.
